Operation Airlift Falls Behind
As reported earlier this week at SantaUpdate.com, the weather at the North Pole is having an impact on Operation Airlift.
Operation Airlift is the effort to support Santa’s flight operations from the North Pole by sending thousands of sleighs powered by tens of thousands of reindeer as Christmas freight, flight support and elves move to various locations around the world.
The most common flight of Operation Airlift is in Christmas presents. Not everything can fit in Santa’s sleigh at one time. Once Santa starts flying his sleigh is constantly resupplied by sleighs filled in things that are restocked in Santa’s sleighs by elves sent there for that purpose.
There are also several other kinds of North Pole sleighs in flight – sleighs that move elves around, scout teams sent out to observe weather and locations, weather trackers, and sleighs that provide support for repairs, diplomatic missions and advanced Santa tracking.
Operation Airlift actually began right after Thanksgiving and it was on track until the weather turned wild at the North Pole. But it is not just North Pole weather affecting flight operations for Operation Airlift. There are weather concerns on every continent right now from severe storms, blizzards and tornados to blistering heat and drought. These are combining to cause problems for Operation Airlift.
Will this all affect Santa?
It’s too early to tell. Launch is still 9 days away and adjustments are being made to compensate for the weather. The latest assessment is that as of today Operation Airlift is about half a day behind. There are plenty of days left to make that up.
We will keep you posted.
