The Saga of Sector 5
Deep in the basement of North Pole Flight Command Elf Pinky and her team of elves work around the clock supporting the early efforts of tracking Santa for Sector 5.
It is still more than 100 days until Santa launches from the North Pole, so the work is preparatory and tedious. For now, they are gathering reports, looking for potential flight problems, trying to see which tracker elves are active and if they will have enough information by the time Santa takes off to be helpful.
What many don’t know are the things they cannot do.
You see, Sector 5 is the only sector without a Regional Tracking Center. Without one, they cannot get out and explore the area. They cannot connect with locals. They cannot learn the culture, the weather and the foods of their sector this year.
Do they have to be there to support flight operations for Santa?
No, not in theory.
But for these intrepid elves there is a nagging feeling that they aren’t doing enough. There is some despair that they aren’t contributing on the level of the other sectors.
Sector 5 is by far the “biggest” of all sectors. They cover Central and North America, an area not geographically larger but more populated with believers – and with tracker elves – than any other sector in the world.
So NOT having a regional tracking center to call home is a big deal to them.
I talked with Elf Pinky. With today being the final day of August she admitted to me that she is resolved to staying at the North Pole and anchoring Sector 5 from the basement of North Pole Flight Command.
She’s not giving up.
But she can see that something must either happen very quickly, or not happen at all if things are to really move forward in her sector.
It’s not an emergency. It’s not the end of the world. But it’s not a happy bit of Christmas news either.
Not for these elves.
